Elaine has been trained in magic and statecraft her entire life. Now she has been promised a position as court mage to the most likely alternative claimant to the throne. But just as she is ready to enter the world of high politics, she loses everything. The Tyrant’s men sack her home, kill her friends and destroy her hopes.
Robbed of all she was promised, Elaine decides she will not wait for power to be given to her. Instead, she will take it for herself. During her ascent to the top, she learns to turn the violence of her enemies against them through cunning and her knowledge of forbidden magic.
As Elaine’s power grows, so do the sacrifices demanded of her. Differences between friendship and weakness, the common good and personal ambition start to blur, and she must decide how far she is willing to go to create the future she envisions for the realm.
